Opportunity

For the past week in my science class we have been ‘studying’ global warming and earth science, also known as watching increasingly depressing movies about the impact that humans have on the earth. The last one we watched was The Corporation. It was about what corporations were defined as and what they are doing to people and the earth.
At one point in the movie, a man was talking about natural disasters and how they affect corporations. According to him “In devastation there is opportunity,” and even though these disasters are harmful to the people of the area, they can allow the stockholders of a corporation to make money. Obviously these people only care about money and don’t have any compassion towards the people and the families that may have been harmed in these disasters.
For example, the events that are happening with the BP oil spill. The papers in the UK are reporting about how the pensions of many people will be lost, perhaps even more than what will happen with the habitat or the people of the area. While the loss of a person’s pension is devastating, to seniors especially, in this disaster there is opportunity, an opportunity to do things differently, an opportunity to build an environmentally friendly foundation and an opportunity to demand change.
From the developing world there is a lesson to be learned because their culture is less dependent on objects. If we could adopt their way of living and become less dependent on ‘stuff’ then I am sure that we could take advantage of the “opportunity in this devastation” and rebuild our society to be better.

Devastation offers opportunity for business because self interest is the motivating factor for those on the outside looking in { they not the victims have the money, time etc }. I fear that those “truly” affected are not in a position to impact major change unless they unify and fight their government to truly reach out beyond self interest and care for the world.
Well said Ieva.

Ieva, you’ve taken steps to grasp the opportunities in devastation and you should be proud of yourself. Keep up the blogging, rather enjoying them!
