Back In Lesotho

Lumela!
It only takes a couple hours for me to remember why I love this country….
- On the drive in from Johannesburg- the blackest sky lit with the shiniest stars from horizon to horizon. Guess there’s a reason they call it Kingdom in the Sky.
- On the 30 min walk into town- more Hellos! and cow encounters than I would otherwise get in a year (and kids laughing as I try to take pictures of something as ordinary as cows).
- On public transport- the pounding base of the music on full volume; the way the drivers tease, yell and dance in the roadway. They live in the moment.
- Marriage proposals- which Noma helpfully translates for me. Seems like a serious matter, but soon turns into a laughing riot when asked how many cows must be prepared for my father.
- Locals asking for pictures- and the huge smiles I get when they see their own faces on the playback screen.
These are only a few of the things I have been appreciating the last few days in Lesotho.
This doesn’t include the success we’ve had in meetings with the principles and teachers of a local High School. They are on board with the Reach Lesotho project, and are planning much for when we all arrive next summer (or winter, actually, in Lesotho).
(Which, by the way, let’s no one forget thier mittens, scarves and hats! It’s freezing here!)
Oh, and anyone looking for a good summer read- check out Little Bee… picked it up in the airport and it really opened my eyes to the Nigerian Oil Wars!
Will check in again once arrived in Accra (a second stop on my more personal journey through Africa this summer).
