Meet the Mentors

Grace Burke is a student at the University of Guelph and is currently working towards her undergraduate degree in Wildlife Biology. She has a deep interest in theatre and English studies but decided to pursue these interests less formally in her free time. Throughout her high school career at Centennial C.V.I., Grace travelled to Managua, Nicaragua and both Iztapa and Guatemala City, Guatemala with a team of high school students. Although she has travelled with other humanitarian organizations, this is Grace’s first trip with Student Reach International and she is very excited to experience Africa alongside other youth determined to make a positive impact. Grace will be the student advisor and mentor for Reach Lesotho in John F. Ross.
Alanna Tobia is a fourth Year Student at the University of Guelph majoring in International Development, with an emphasis in Environmental Development. Her passion for the environment began when she spent the summer in Australia and New Zealand studying biology, where for the first time her eyes were opened to environmental degradation. Alanna worked with Project Serve for a brief period where she was fortunate to spend time in Mississippi taking the oral histories of Hurricane Katrina victims and doing some relief work. Alanna worked with Global Youth Network where she traveled all around Guatemala volunteering at various NGOs, schools, and hospitals. Alanna is on two committees for Student Reach International and will be a student leader for Centennial C.V.I.
James Stephens is in his fourth year of studies at the University of Guelph majoring in Natural Resource Management with an area of emphasis in Biotic Systems. His love of the natural sciences is only matched by his passion for social justice, having volunteer independently and with Global Youth Network in Vancouver’s downtown east side, Costa Rica, Iceland, Bolivia and in the summer of 2010, Cambodia. With Global Youth Network James has had the good fortune to spend time in orphanages and living with indigenous tribes in the Amazon rain forest, spurring a life-long commitment to revealing the interconnectedness of environmental and social improvement. James will fill the role of student mentor for Guelph C.V.I.
